Travel Writing and Wales
Call for essays

In 2014 the journal Studies in Travel Writing will publish a special issue on travel writing and Wales, edited by Carol Tully (Bangor University), Kathryn Jones (Swansea University) and Heather Williams (Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies).

Essays in English, of around 7,000-10,000 words, may address topics relating to the mediation of Wales through travel writing from 1750 to the present day. Travel writing may encompass travel memoirs, travel guides, almanacs, encyclopaedias, private correspondences, creative works, periodical contributions, websites and blogs. Contributions are welcomed on representations of Wales and ‘Welshness’ / ‘Celticness’ in travel writing by travellers (e.g. scholar travellers, tourists, migrants, exiles and refugees) from across the globe. The texts studied may be from any country, language or culture, but essays should be in English. Topics might include, but are not limited to:

Welsh cultural identity

Discourses of ‘difference’

‘Celtic melancholy’ and nostalgia

Landscape and industry

Religion and the sublime

The timetable is as follows: Abstracts of around 500 words by 1 April 2012; essays to be commissioned by 15 May 2012; commissioned essays due to editors by 5 January 2013; referees’ reports due 28 February 2013; final copy to editors by 1 December 2013.
